Greensboro Celebrates Preservation Month 2007

Greensboro's Aycock Historic DistrictA deep sense of history and community distinguishes Greensboro from other communities, and Preservation Greensboro will celebrate the city's past through a variety of walking tours, special events, and an old fashioned Supper-on-the-Lawn during Historic Preservation Month this May.

Preservation Month is administered each year through the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This year, the theme for the month is: Preservation Works! "American enthusiasm for historic preservation is stronger than ever," according to Richard Moe, President, National Trust for Historic Preservation, "and we are working more effectively than ever – protecting the places that people care about; sparking a renewed sense of community pride; bringing new investment, new jobs and new economic vitality to historic commercial areas; keeping our history alive and close at hand so we can live with it, learn from it and be inspired by it."

BlandwoodThis enthusiasm is evident in Greensboro, where places like South Elm Street, College Hill, and Bennett College exemplify the economic vitality of historic preservation. "Greensboro, perhaps more than any other city in North Carolina, is a city of neighborhoods" says Benjamin Briggs, Executive Director of Preservation Greensboro. "This year we are celebrating neighborhoods, and cultivating enjoyment and conservation of those treasured places."

Preservation Month activities in Greensboro include walking tours of the Aycock , Fisher Park, College Hill, and Lindley Park neighborhoods, Old Greensborough, and the Green Hill Cemetery. Special events include Art in the Garden, a display of original art work on the grounds of Blandwood, a special workshop on cemetery care, a picnic supper in Lindley Park, and free tours of Blandwood every Wednesday of the month.
