New Publication Spotlights Historic Architecture

Landmark Properties Cover10 May 2006 - Finally, Guilford County has a publication to promote its diverse architectural history for the benefit of visitors and residents. The book, released this month, offers over 100 color photographs of Landmark sites accompanied by historical background, dates of historic designation, and community location. The book promises to set a new standard in awareness of Guilford County historic resources, and foster greater appreciation of buildings and places that define the community.

Preservation Greensboro Incorporated partnered with the the book's publisher, the Guilford County Historic Preservation Commission, to celebrate 25 years of service to county citizens with the catalog of eighty designated sites important to Guilford history. The publication is the first to showcase and promote all of Guilford County’s designated historic Landmarks. Established in 1980 as a recommendation from the county’s Bicentennial Commission, the program is operated through the Guilford County Planning and Development office to preserve and protect Guilford County’s unique architecture, rich history, and cultural heritage through state enabling legislation.

Published in appreciation of countless volunteer commissioners, staff, public officials, and historians who have supported the Commission over the past two-and-a-half decades, the book entitled Landmark Properties of Guilford County, North Carolina illustrates sites designated through the standard voluntary process established by state law. Once recognized, alterations to these designated Landmarks are monitored, and changes can be made upon receiving approval by the Commission. In this way, alterations are made to Landmark historic sites with no irreversible consequences, and with special consideration given to the history, architecture, and craftsmanship of each site.

Be sure to stop by the Guilford County Planning Department, or the Blandwood Museum Shop for your copy of this beautifully illustrated book. The book costs only $20, but is sure to grace numerous Guilford County coffee tables for years to come!
